Peeking around a tree

Cradling my beloved Sako Vixen in my hands I entered the dark and foreboding bush before daylight, Wilson was allowed to range in front of me for a short while , in a bid to rid him of his excess energy, before we got down to the serious stuff.

A couple of hours had passed and whilst following a game trail, suddenly the dog shows interest and his head goes violently back and his bodily movements become erratic, there is obviously a deer near by, we follow on, sidling now above a steep drop off with some view across a creek head to the other side of the gulley, we pause to scan through the vegetation, just then a branch breaks, but we see no sign of movement. After sitting a short spell we carry on, dropping into the gut and sidling again at a higher level from which we heard the crack of what sounded like a branch.

A short while later we stop for a break and a snack, we sit against a tree with a view across an open treed gully , the dog in between chomps on his biscuit was busily testing the up wind and showing some interest. Snack over we cross the gulley and slowly make our way through open bush, the dog slightly behind me, but showing interest, just as we were topping a spur, I was temporary blinded by some rays of the sun but at the same time picked up some movement ahead. I shaded my eye with my left hand and picked up the neck and head of a hind in my 1-5 Leupold scope. I promptly replaced my left hand with a view through my scope and the cross hairs settled on the neck of a hind. The image disappeared at the shot , but two other hinds made a break off to my left. I went over to where I had last seen the animal and looked down a steep bit of ground but nothing could I see of my hind. Wilson finally with tail wagging found her some fifty meters or so tucked under a bank un seen from my position . A small hole in her neck confirmed the 53 grain bullets efficiency. I had shot the bambi, and the two deer making the escape must have been the mother and yearling, luck of the draw yet again.
