We had been hunting since first light, it was now 10 a.m. we had been plagued with a tail wind for most of those hours but now finally with the wind favouring us Wilson was showing an interest in the current of air that was caressing our faces. Carefully covering the ground slowly and scanning the tight bush, all the time taking note of the pooch. His tail was now wagging which I take for a good sign, as it is an indication the animal is close enough to see, he finally sat down and stared with intent at a plot of trees in deep shadow. I upped my scope for a closer look and at first saw nothing, the second time I raised my scope to look was when I finally made out firstly the pelt of the season changing animal (which at first I put down to a log) followed closely by a rock still head gazing directly at me. I wasted no time in squeezing off a round from my Remington 700, I was able to see the animal take a pace or two forward before disappearing into the ferns. A short walk over to where I last spied him resulted in me actually finding the completely inert form before the dog was able to.
