Recce for roar 2023

Summer winds to a close and it is time to think hunting once again. The freezer is still healthy but you really can’t get too much of a good thing. A two night Wx window has presented, so Wison and me packed our gear and hit the trail. Fast forward A longish day on and we are nearing an old campsite, it is now early evening.

Zpacks solo is quickly erected and camp established. Now this tent is definitely a one man tent so said pooch will have to sleep outside under the brief awning, which he has done once before in December. However it is a tad cooler now and we knew we would be at the mercy of a brisk south westerly, so with that in mind I thought to pack along the dog’s down coat as insurance to his potential whining. I also brought a few biscuits to tide him over until we find some meat.

As evening turned to dusk it was plain that an animal was not about to show itself in our close proximity so we had dinner and dived into the pit. Well I did and Wilson made do outside. “call this dinner?” I heard him mutter under his breath, as I snuggled down in my sleeping bag.

Morning arrived in a rush after a not too fruitful sleep. That seems to be the way , no sleep for most of the night then in the last hours before dawn you crash. OK so out of the farter and porridge down the neck, rifle check pack on, eye contact with dog and gone.

A little too quickly alas, and what with the dim light as well. I saw two animals take off and over a spur moments before I spied the third animal, a stag, start to follow them. Pack off ,rifle across, and no time to range accurately, so I took the shot as the stag paused momentarily. Bugger I pulled the shot , but incredibly I had still made contact with the 165 Accubond , which landed a tad too far back but slowed the animal perceptibly. It was now just a matter of him coming to a halt so I could finish the job. He eventually paused just below the skyline and I was able to place the next round with some precision over the 200 meter distance.

Looks like you have breakfast dog!
